Media/society : technology, industries, content, and users

Main Post:

Does anyone here have the pdf version of “Media/society : technology, industries, content, and users” 7th edition by David Croteau, and would send it to me? :)

Top Comment: If you’re having trouble buying the textbook for your class, talk to your professor rather than asking strangers to send you things for free.

Has Social Media been harmful or good for society? Why?

it is already causing serious stuff in people. It is not healthy to live in a world where everyone pretends to be perfect. And knowing that you aren't doesn't help at all. It is hard to accept that the easier it is to connect with others, the less connected we are... and just remember that it is the only modern way to fit in nowadays. It is frustrating to know that even if you know it is harmful for you, everyday being in the internet gets more and more important and essential. The worst part of all of this is that you are used by the social media. If they are free, it means that YOU are their product. That cannot be great

Black Workers in American Society vs Social Media Arts (Schedule Advice)

Main Post:

so I’m looking for advice on my schedule.

Here’s my current list

-Orgo 2 -Bio 2 -intermediate micro -either Black Workers or Social Media

Last semester I took orgo, bio 1, an Econ class, and an art and I found it decently time consuming and tough to be honest.

I was wondering if Black Workers in Society is right for me considering my other classes are already pretty taxing; is this class easy or light?

Black Workers allows me to finish my CC, while social media arts doesn’t count towards any core requirements. But if Black Workers is taxing or academically demanding, idk if I want to keep it considering I have orgo, bio, and intmd micro.

I also will have to apply for jobs and research positions this semester and I’m wondering if the workload in Black Workers of Society would be heavy enough to discourage these things

Social media has destroyed society.

Main Post:

Edit:: This post has been downvoted more than upvoted, which is hilarious to me because most of the comments are in disagreement with this opinion. Shouldn't that mean its upvoted ? Hmmm.

In the age of social media, we have never more so been able to communicate with people, family, friends, and colleagues. But we have never more so felt alone. According to research, there has never been a generation of people who have felt more alone, depressed, and suicidal than this current generation.

I believe that a lot of it has to do with the age of social media. The availability of peoples opinions and thoughts on any given matter to any person has absolutely destroyed the fabric of civility, good conversation, and above all, manners and politeness.

The age of social media, the veneer nature of people expresses themselves with no remorse, no thought to the ones they are targeting. This has led to mass bullying, fake news, and utter heartache to families that would otherwise be in good relationship with each other.

Social media has taught and social engineered a lot of people to be absolute narcissists. To obtain satisfaction and self worth just from someone liking your post. Incessantly driving your need to do more in order to be more liked. Loved. Admired. This has led to people being incredibly shallow. Petulant, and above all, lacking in intelligence and forethought, and critical thinking skills.

It is destroying our humanity. Instead of building us up, it is tearing us down. We see this with all the ads targeting you, breaching your privacy, spying on you. Soon we will live in a world where we are constantly monitored, just like a lot of places in China. 5g networks will make this even worse as the capability of monitoring you becomes an ever smothering presence. We carry literal recorders with us wherever we go with our phones, alexas, and echos. Ever watching. Ever recording.

And it's all aimed at boxing us in to our own little world, alone, lethargic, and apathetic to the things going on around us outside our purview. I weep for this world and what's to come. That is my unpopular opinion. I know social media has done a lot of good, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. As Gandalf once said, "I would desire the ring to do good, but through me, But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine." That is social media.

Book about the media's influence on society

Main Post:

Hello, I am doing a research paper regarding the effects and influence of media on American society. I have to find books that were written at least 50 years apart. I found one written in 2007, but I haven't had much luck finding one made 1950s or earlier.

It would be great if anyone had any suggestions for me. Thank you!

The MSM Hates the Joker. Not Because Society Will Imitate It, But Because It Imitates Society.

Main Post:

I'm fairly new to reddit, so forgive me in advance if this is in the wrong place or formatted incorrectly.

The Joker received an absurd amount of negative attention from mainstream media outlets. People said the movie would incite mass shootings, should be banned from theaters, is an 'incel movie', and much more. This couldn't be further from the truth. After watching the Joker twice, I've come to understand that this movie isn't a call-to-arms for those who are 'unhinged'. Rather, it's a reflection of how grim and cruel society can be. As such, it brings awareness to mental health and the lack of empathy in society.

At some point in our lives, whether we like to admit it or not, we've all been in Arthur Fleck's shoes. Some of us are the kid who got bullied in school by a group of kids who thought it would be funny to smack someone around. Others have been the person who lives in a crowded city , carrying out the same monotonous routine of going to work and returning home to our run down apartment with little to look forward to but a TV dinner and the usual show. There are even those of us who have struggled with mental health and sought help, yet were thrown to the side and told to "get over it" or "toughen up" instead of being given the support that is desperately needed.

Today's media likes to paint a pretty picture. Everywhere we look, we're told to smile and that we should be happy. Social media and the internet are flooded with an overwhelming amount of forced positivity. As a result; when the Joker comes along and delivers a powerful story which people can relate to (not the killings, but the external and internal struggles which Arthur faces) that paints a grim picture of society, the media is not to happy.

I can't even tell my family I struggle with mental illness, they will just make fun of me and tell me I'm faking it
